Introduction

Martin Guitars has been in business since 1833, and for most of that time, their guitars have been made in the United States. However, in recent years, the company has begun outsourcing some of their production to foreign countries, most notably Mexico.

This decision has been controversial among both guitar players and Martin fans, as many people feel that it is important to support American-made products. However, Martin insists that they still maintain a high level of quality control on their overseas-made instruments, and that they are still some of the best guitars available on the market today.

The Early Days: New York

Martin opened their doors in New York City in 1833. In those early days, all Martin guitars were made in their New York City workshop. Not much is known about the guitars Martin made in the earliest days, but we do know that Christian Frederick Martin Sr. established the company with the goal of making high-quality, handcrafted instruments.

Innovation has always been a part of the Martin story. In 1839, Christian Frederick Martin Sr. was issued US Patent #1 for his invention of X-bracing, which helped to make his guitars stronger and more durable. This innovation changed the sound of the guitar and would become an industry standard for acoustic guitars.

In 1864, Christian Frederick Jr. took over the family business and moved it to Nazareth, Pennsylvania where they started mass-producing guitars. At first they used local woods like Pennsylvania cherry and rock Maple, but soon they started using more exotic woods like Brazilian rosewood and mahogany from Central America.

Over the years, Martin has continued to innovate and improve their guitars. They were one of the first companies to use adhesives in guitar construction and they developed their own patented bracing system called A-Frame bracing, which is still used on some of their higher-end models today.

The Move to Nazareth

In 1838, Christian Frederick Martin Sr. (1796–1873) established C.F. Martin & Company in New York City. In the 1830s, the firm began making harpsichords, and later moved into building small gut-stringed instruments, which eventually led to the development of the famous Martin guitars that we know today.

In 1851, Martin Sr.’s son, Christian Frederick Martin Jr. (1823–1900), joined the company, and eventually took over upon his father’s retirement in 1873. Shortly thereafter, in 1878, Jr. moved operations to Nazareth, Pennsylvania in order to be closer to more established violin makers as well as other instrument makers such as Steinway & Sons pianos and C.F. Lehmann banjos (both of which were located in New York City).

The move proved to be fruitful for young Martin Jr., as he would go on to not only provide guitars for some of the biggest names in country music such as Hank Williams and George Jones, but would also help design iconic models such as the dreadnought and the OM (or Orchestral Model).

The Modern Martin Guitar Factory

The Martin Guitar Company is one of the oldest and most respected guitar makers in the world. The company was founded in 1833 by Christian Frederick Martin, and today they are known for making some of the finest acoustic guitars available. While Martin guitars are now made in several different factories, the majority of their guitars are still made in their original factory in Nazareth, Pennsylvania.

The modern Martin factory is a state-of-the-art facility that houses all of the latest technology and equipment for making acoustic guitars. This includes a computer-controlled cutting machine that can cut the top and back plates for a guitar with amazing accuracy. The company also uses advanced robotic machines to do much of the work that was once done by hand, such as carving the braces for the inside of the guitar.

Despite all of this modern technology, there is still a lot of work that is done by hand at the Martin factory. For example, each piece of wood that is used to make a guitar is hand-selected by experienced luthiers. And, when it comes time to assemble the guitar, each one is put together by hand to ensure that it meets Martin’s high standards.

If you’re looking for a quality acoustic guitar, then you can’t go wrong with a Martin. Whether you choose one that was made in their Pennsylvania factory or one of their other factories around the world, you can be sure that you’re getting a well-made instrument that will last for many years to come.

Why Martin Guitars are Still Made in the USA

Despite the fact that Martin Guitars are now owned by a Japanese company, C.F. Martin & Co. still proudly produces its guitars in Nazareth, Pennsylvania. In fact, the company has been making guitars in the same factory for nearly 185 years. That’s something that very few companies can say, regardless of what product they make. So, why does Martin Guitars still make its products in the USA?

It’s no secret that manufacturing costs are lower in other countries, especially Asia. So, one might think that it would be more cost-effective for Martin Guitars to move its production elsewhere. However, there are several reasons why the company has chosen to stay put.

First and foremost, Martin Guitars is a traditional company that takes a lot of pride in its heritage. The company was founded in 1833 by Christian Frederick Martin Sr., and it has been passed down through six generations of the Martin family. This sense of tradition is evident in everything that the company does, from the way its guitars are made to the way its employees are treated.

Second, there is a certain level of quality that comes with Made in USA products that you simply can’t get with products made elsewhere. When you buy a Martin Guitar, you know that it was made by skilled craftsmen using high-quality materials. This attention to detail is what has made Martin Guitars so popular among professional musicians over the years.

Finally, it’s important to note that many of the employees at Martin Guitars have been with the company for their entire careers. These workers have a deep understanding of the guitar-making process and they take a lot of pride in their work. This level of experience and expertise is something that would be very difficult to replicate elsewhere.

So, when you buy a Martin Guitar, you can rest assured knowing that it was made by proud American workers using time-tested methods and high-quality materials.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Martin Guitars are made in several different countries depending on the model. The X Series and Road Series are made in Mexico, while the Standard and Custom models are made in the United States. The Vintage series is made in Japan and the Authentic models are made in Germany.
