Epiphone’s History
Epiphone is an American musical instrument manufacturer founded in 1873 by Anastasios Stathopoulos, currently based in Nashville, Tennessee. In 1957, Epiphone, Inc. was purchased by Gibson and relocated from New York to Kalamazoo, Michigan. Epiphone was Gibson’s main rivalry in the archtop market prior to 1957.
Epiphone’s beginnings
Epiphone was first established in 1873 by Anastasios Stathopoulos in Smyrna, Ottoman Empire (now İzmir, Turkey). The name comes from Anastasios’ son, Epaminondas (Greek: Επαμείνωνδας), who joined his father in the business at a young age of 15. Stathopolous originally made mandolins and other string instruments, and moved his business to New York City in 1903. However, Epaminondas and his son Epi took over the company in 1924, and subsequently began making guitars.
Epiphone’s ownership
Epiphone was founded in 1873 by Anastasios Stathopoulo, a Greek violin-maker. The company started out making string instruments, but later transitioned to making guitars. Epiphone was eventually bought by Gibson in 1957. Today, Epiphone is seen as a sub-brand of Gibson, and most of the company’s guitars are made in Asia (specifically China).
Where are Epiphone Guitars made?
Epiphone guitars are made in several different countries, including China, Korea, and Indonesia. The majority of Epiphone’s entry-level instruments are made in China, and most of their higher-end models are made in Korea. Epiphone also has a factory in Indonesia that makes some of their lower-end models.
Epiphone’s U.S.A. Factory
Epiphone’s U.S.A. factory is located in Nashville, Tennessee. The factory is capable of producing over 400 guitars a day. guitars are made from mahogany and maple wood. The necks are made from mahogany with a rosewood fretboard. The bridges are also made from rosewood.
Epiphone’s China Factory
Epiphone’s China Factory is located in Qingdao, China and has been in operation since 2002. All Epiphone acoustic guitars, entry level electrics, and licensed copycat models are produced at this facility. The only Epiphone instruments not made at the China factory are high-end, limited edition models and signature artist models.
The Qingdao factory is designed to meet Epiphone’s demanding standards for quality control. All of the major components of an Epiphone guitar are manufactured in-house, including the necks, bodies, fingerboards, hardware, and electronics. This ensures that every guitar that comes out of the factory meets Epiphone’s high standards for quality and workmanship.
The China factory also houses Epiphone’s state-of-the-art Research and Development department. This department is responsible for developing new models and keeping Epiphone at the forefront of guitar design and innovation.

Epiphone’s Korea Factory
Epiphone’s Korea factory is located in Incheon, Korea. This is where Epiphone produces their lower to mid range electric guitars and basses. All of Epiphone’s USA made instruments are produced in their Nashville, Tennessee factory.
The Korea factory produces a great majority of Epiphone instruments. Some instruments that are produced in Korea are the G-400, Explorer, Flying V, Firebird, Les Paul 100 and Special II, SG 310 and 318, Prophecy series, as well as the newer models of the ES and dot series guitars and basses. The production in Korea has increased dramatically in recent years due to high demand for Epiphone instruments.
