The Temples are one of those bands that have just about everything going for them. The group blew up almost over night when they released a demo tape that made it’s hands quickly into some important people’s hands. Those tapes even drove a hand full of promoters to book the band before they even had a chance to played their first live gig together. In true rock-and-roll fashion, The Temples took it as a compliment, played the shows as if they had been playing for years and the rest was history. This quartet from Kettering, England has far exceed any expectations or limitations that normally are normally put on a modern day band. They have an amazing new-millennium twist on 60′s psychedelic music, fused with the perfect combination of pop energy. With the help of the amazing Fat Possum Records, the group has been full-speed-ahead for the past 10 months playing some amazing shows around the world and even opening for The Rolling Stones. I was fortunate enough to send a few questions their way and I am very excited to share them with you today. Check out Sound Colour vibration’s exclusive interview with Temples below.

Nick: Your sound is absolutely magnificent. How did Temples come to be?

Temples: The four of us are from Kettering, in the Midlands and we’re still here. We recorded some demos and put them on the internet, it got passed around and before we’d even played live together we were getting booked for shows – so we had to start rehearsing very quickly. That was about 10 months ago and we haven’t stopped playing since.

Nick: What is the story behind the band’s name?

Temples: We really like the spiritual awe of music, something that’s grand and magnificent. Temples says everything while being generic enough to say nothing.

Nick: I read an article saying Syd Barrett was a major influence on the band, can you please talk a little about how his work inspired your group?

Temples: That’s Adam, he’s a huge fan of Syd Barrett, but we all have our pin ups. I think Syd is one we all share. He’s a fantastic song writer and at creating this imagery with his music, it’s something we really admire. Theres a distinctly British way of songwriting that’s awkward, charming and colourful and it’s something we take pride in.

Nick: Who were some of the band’s other major influences?

Temples: Floyd, Soft Machine, King Crimson, Bolan, British Psychedelia, – and then bands like The Byrds started our obsession with the 12 string guitar. Songwriters who embrace the weird and wonderful in their pop music, Todd Rundgren, Bowie, Bolan, Brian Eno.

Nick: I have to ask, what was it like to support the Rolling Stones at Hyde Park?

Temples: Really surreal. They’re the biggest band in the world, still alive and kickin’.

Nick: As musicians, what are some of your favorite aspects of the creation and touring process?

Temples: All of it, we wouldn’t rather be doing anything else. Nothing is more exciting than touring and recording and we get to do both all the time. Both allow you to experiment.

Nick: You will be touring the U.S. in November, what can we expect from the live show?

Temples: Reverb, gold and a plenty of phasers.
