    Taft Theatre, Cincinnati, Ohio – November 11, 2012

    Glen Campbell was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in the summer of 2011. He began his Goodbye Tour that fall. My family and I went to see him in Renfro Valley, Kentucky that September at the beginning of the tour. On November 11, 2012, my family and I went to see him at the Taft Theatre in Cincinnati, Ohio. Now nearing the end of the final tour of his legendary career, the effects of the disease were certainly more evident than fourteen months ago. If it were not for this disease and the confusion that accompanies it and some understanding on our part, this could have been a disappointing concert.

    My feeling was that through the first three numbers, as he struggled with words and Teleprompters, the audience was not sure how to react. Then he sang, “Try a Little Kindness.” Maybe the message of the song resonated with the crowd as he received the first of many thunderous ovations. He chose to do “Didn’t We” a song written by Jimmy Webb. I remember him performing this song the first time I saw him in concert some forty-three years ago. Bringing back even more memories was “Lovesick Blues.” Originally recorded for the album “Houston (I’m Comin’ to See You)” in 1974; it was a song my dad used to sing. “Dueling Banjos” and “Foggy Mountain Breakdown,” with daughter Ashley, showed that Glen could still pick with the best of them. He ended the show with “Wichita Lineman” and another standing ovation. He returned for a three-song encore ending the evening with “A Better Place” and a final standing ovation as he walked off stage waving goodbye.

    As I wrote earlier, this could have been a disappointing concert. It wasn’t. My family and I were blessed with one more opportunity to thank Glen for the great music and memories he has provided us over the years. More importantly, we wanted to let him and his family know that they will be in our thoughts and our prayers in the future. Thanks again Glen, you are a man with “True Grit.” Peace be with you.

    The Can’t Say Goodbye Tour

    It was about fourteen months ago when my family and I made a trip down to Renfro Valley to celebrate my fifty-fifth birthday and to see Glen Campbell. With Glen’s announcement that he had Alzheimer’s disease, he …was just in the first months of his “Goodbye Tour.” It was a great trip and a great concert. It gave me the chance to say goodbye to one of my favorite artists and entertainers. As fate would have it, I’m getting another chance to say goodbye. The Goodbye Tour is coming to the Taft Theatre, just across the river in Cincinnati, Ohio, on Sunday night…and my family and I will be present.

    Last September I posted a short essay talking about my connection with the “Rhinestone Cowboy.” I’m posting it once again as I prepare to see Glen Campbell in concert for what may be my final Glen Campbell concert. Since I hope it’s not, I’m calling this the “Can’t Say Goodbye Tour.”

    “Ladies and gentlemen, tonight the Garden State Arts Center proudly presents Capitol recording star Glen Campbell.” I was twelve years old when I attended my first Glen Campbell concert and my first big-name concert ever. It was July 3, 1969, and my family and I had just missed being on the Glen Campbell “Live” album by one night. Yet, each time I listen to that album, I experience the excitement of that first concert.

    As a family, we had become fans of Glen through his television show. Mom fell in love with his boyish good looks and “Dreams of the Everyday Housewife.” Dad, a country singer and guitar player in younger days, was impressed with Glen’s guitar prowess and his showmanship. Influencing my musical tastes was the variety of music Dad listened to and, on those occasions when he would get out his old Gibson, the songs he sang. Therefore, it wasn’t a stretch for this New Jersey boy to become a fan of the man from Arkansas.

    When Glen released “That Christmas Feeling” in the fall of 1968, we bought the album as a gift for Mom’s birthday that December. One night while she was out shopping, Dad decided that we would give it a listen before we wrapped it. He surgically sliced open the cellophane and carefully removed the album from its cover. Once we had finished listening, he placed it back in its cover and resealed the cellophane with transparent tape. To this day, I can’t remember if we ever told Mom.

    August 13, 1969 and my dad, a fan of the space program, took us to New York City for the tickertape parade honoring the Apollo 11 astronauts. We were front row for the ceremony at City Hall. When the returning heroes emerged from the building, the crowd began pushing forward crushing us against a metal barrier. Somehow, Dad managed to rescue us to safety. Although we were relieved that no one got hurt, the disappointment of not seeing the astronauts hung over us until we made our way to Radio City Music Hall and “True Grit.” There was Glen along with John Wayne and Kim Darby to save our day.

    By the mid 1980s I was married and living in Colorado with my wife, Bonnie. Glen came to town to perform with the Denver Pops and I took Bonnie to see her first Glen Campbell concert. An appearance in Greely, Colorado however is one that is most memorable. Performing with just a small band and with the beautiful Colorado scenery behind him, Glen talked about filming “True Grit” with John Wayne. The story segued into the movie’s theme song taking me back to 1969 and Radio City.

    In September of 1989, and now with a family of my own, we relocated to Northern Kentucky. We didn’t know too many people when we first arrived, but there was one familiar face…Glen Campbell. He was performing just on the other side of the Ohio River at Sawyer Point in Cincinnati. At one-year of age, our daughter Liza was at her first Glen Campbell concert.

    Now it’s September 2011 and Glen and I are about to come full circle. Just as he was at my first concert back in 1969, I’ll be attending one of the shows on his final concert tour. On September 17, the night before my 55th birthday, he will be performing at the New Barn in Renfro Valley, Kentucky. Just as my dad had brought his family to see Glen forty-two years ago, I’ll be bringing my family to see Glen.

    Throughout my life, no other artist has been so intertwined, a thread that ties that twelve-year-old boy to this fifty-five year old man. I want to be there to thank Glen not only for all the great music but also for his being a part of my life. In his liner notes for the album “Ghost on the Canvas”, Glen writes “In some ways, it’s a musical biography. But hopefully you’ll find a little bit of yourself in there, too.” I have. Glen, you and your family are in my prayers.

    Glen was great in Hiawassee,Ga on Friday the 13th. He sang great and was joking about how to pronounce Hiawassee all during the show.
    He tired a little toward the finish but did very well. He got lots of standing ovations. Ashley and the band were the opening act.
    So many of the great ones are fading away. Good to see Glen one more time.

    Freefall dance company of people with a learning disability practising for the We Dance festival taking place on 13-14 July at mac birmingham.

    We Dance is an exciting learning disability dance project which will end with a two day festival in July. The project is part of Dancing for the Games and the Cultural Olympiad in the West Midlands.

    We Dance will involve local community dance groups in Birmingham and acclaimed national companies and it will also train new dance leaders to work with people with a learning disability.

    Pupils who have a learning disability in Birmingham will make two ‘Dance for Camera’ films that will be shown on all over the BBC Big Screens throughout the UK.

    It ends in July with a two day festival on 13-14 July at mac in Birmingham, featuring performances, workshops, an exhibition and information stands.

    After I finished typing my last comment, I remembered that Glen hosted the Los Angeles premiere of “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” at the Studio City Theater, in Los Angeles, in 1971. Mr. Campbell appeared on stage — I can’t remember if he sang or not — where he introduced the film and gave out prizes. As a five-year-old, that evening meant a lot to me!

    Hi Folks! I not only saw Glen in Red Bank NJ 3 weeks ago, I met him in person. What a great surprise that was! One half block from the entrance to the venue, he was there with Kim going into the restaurant. We had a talk, got my picture taken with him, shook his hand and thanked him! I have seen now, at a place here in NJ they posted that Glen will be back here in NJ in october! Did not see that on his website, but they got him booked! YES I am going again! As it turned out, I had a friend who also ran into him that evening. She cauhgt him before show time, when his family was playing he was out back, sipping on a coffee leaning against a tree. My friend said his security guy invited her over to him, she got his picture together, the security guy took the pics! He gave her a guitar pick, signed her c/d.She was very ,very happy! Life is good!

      I had that same kind of experience last September when he was playing at Renfro Valley in Kentucky. My wife and I were walking around outside before the show and I happened to spot him ( I wasn’t sure since it was at a distance). We walked down and I got to meet him, my wife got our picture and asked him to autograph his CD. I’ve had the CD, tickets, picture and one from his show all framed. He always takes a minute for his fans. He is a very personable performer.

    Saw Glen last night for the first time in Phoenix, I loved you as a kid I used to sit by the stereo and sing to your records for hours, I was singing with you last night, what a great time. I never realized how good you are on the guitar. Glen you are absolutely is incredible. I would definetly put you up there with the likes of Clapton, You would think it was a young man on stage the way you played. You have incredible heart and talernt. Your kids were great too, I think it is just too cool the family thing that is going on onstage. Goes the show the apples DON’T fall far from the tree. Keep it going Glen, it was a pleasure and an honor to see you and I hope I get to again.

    I am sorry about your Alzheimer’s disease diagnosis. I will be praying for you. Did you ever watch Valerie Saxion on TBN’s “Alternative Medicine?” She interviewed a lady who worked at the Pentagon for many years. Her husband was also diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. She was a researcher and reversed his disease. If I recall correctly a mineral she recommended was magnesium. Valerie has her own website. I believe her website says she does consulations. Apparently she asssited Jan Crouch in Jan’s battle with fourth stage colon cancer. Don’t give up! God Bless and your family and and staff! Jon-Phoenix.

    It was really nice seeing you on Sunday Morning. It brought back so many memories of when I was younger and listened to your music. I cared for my grandmother for years in my home while she was dealing with Alzheimer’s. And because of that experiance, I have built memory care facilities and help people with dementia and Alzheimer’s. We plan on coming to see you on tour. Our prayers are with you.

    To Glen Campbell’s kids: READ THIS BOOK: “Alzheimer’s Disease What If There Was a Cure” by Mary Newport. Glen’s memory problems may be caused by a problem with “glucose uptake” by the neurons. If yes, he can eat coconut oil (and Medium Chain Triglyceride Oil) which will provide an alternative energy source for those neurons. It has helped my husband, and many other people. Please try it… it’s very safe, and may help Glen’s memory problems to get better.

    I had no idea how precious those moments on my daddy’s lap listening to Glen were.

    Time moves SO FAST.

    I’m with radio station, AM 1130, KWKH in Shreveport. Glen Campbell was in fine form in Bossier Saturday night at his “The Goodbye Tour.” He still sings beautifully and plays a mean guitar. His children, Ashley, Shannon and Cal are extremely talent as well. It makes for a must see show if you can catch him in another city! Love you Glen!

    January 2012 update

    Conversations continue with Midlands Arts Centre and MENCAP – the partnership developing the plans for a 2012 Cultural Olympiad themed Dance Festival with and for people with Learning Difficulties. Subject to successful funding bids, we are all really excited about the creative possibilities this can offer FreeFall, and the wider Birmingham community.

    At Birmingham Royal Ballet’s studios on 4 February 2011, Freefall will be hosting the University of Birmingham, leading a teacher training workshop with final year PGCE PE students.

    In January and February, FreeFall are reviving September Reflections, one of the Company’s early dance pieces. This will be filmed and form a part of an NHS training resource – which looks at adapting communication for people with learning difficulties. This project builds on a relationship we have with the Department of Occupational Therapy at Coventry University.

    Following a well received lecture demonstration at a Specialist Schools and Academies Trust (SSAT) Conference in November, FreeFall will be performing and running sessions at the next SSAT Community Arts Coordinator conference at the Birmingham Hippodrome on 29 March.

    In the meantime rehearsals continue for two performances of FreeFall’s newest creation: Seaside Rendezvous – A Tribute to Freddie Mercury. On 16 March at 1pm, FreeFall will perform to an invited audience of school and University students. The 15 March 7.30pm performance will be open to the public.

    Saw Glen last night at Town Hall in NYC. Simply amazing. His voice sounded great and his guitar playing continues to amaze. The band was awesome. I’m so glad I got to see him. I’ve been listening to him since my parents introduced me to his show at 9 years old. Seeing him was a real treat I will not forget. Thank you, Glen!!!

    Joe Elliott (singer with Def Leppard) on his Planet Rock show has voted “Ghost On The Canvas” as his album of the year. He said himself that Glen isn’t normally what you would hear on Planet Rock, but this album is so great it deserves to be heard. He also cited various musicians who guested on the album. Gotta hand it to Joe for sticking his neck out and surprising a few people (including me) by playing Glen on Planet Rock. He thought the album was great, so why shouldn’t rock fans hear it! He played “Your Amazing Grace” – actually my favourite track on the album!     Glen, my first recollection of you was watching you on “Shindig.” I was just 10 years old, but coming from a home in which music was part of our daily lives, I was a fan of both your singing and your guitar playing. I followed your career through the years, and was disheartened to hear of your diagnosis. I began “catching up” by watching your on-line videos, and assembling a “Glen Campbell library” of CD’s, books, and videos. When my sister called with tickets to your concert in St. Charles, Missouri, the news was bittersweet. We looked forward to the concert, but were saddened that this tour would be your last. We sat in the second row and were in awe of your talent. While you’re recognized for your amazing voice and phenomenal guitar playing, when watching videos of your duets I noticed your unique ability to “emulate” the enunciation, phrasing, and timing of the person with whom you were harmonizing. In fact, in all the duets I watched, your voice couldn’t have blended any better if you had been singing with a sibling. I’m absolutely amazed at what you can do musically, YET NOT READ MUSIC! Your “ear” for music can be explained only as God-given. You can’t be taught perfect pitch and perfect harmony. As a recipient of your amazing talent for 40+ years, I treasure my “Glen Campbell collection” and will never tire of watching you perform and listening to a voice that can sing everything from ballads to big-band to Beach Boys. They say that music has “staying power” with those in various stages of Alzheimer’s. I have no doubt that with a guitar in your hands, those close to you will continue to be heartened by your phenomenal talent for years to come! Bless you Glen, and bless your family for pioneering an era in which those with Alzheimer’s are not “retired” to home while they still have so much to give.

    We really enjoyed the show in French Lick last night. Although you were suffering of a cold and a sore throat, the evening was still very enjoyable. We enjoyed your interaction with your talented children. This morning was quite the surprise, when we came upon your tour bus outside of the New Baden Hotel. Of course we parked, ran in, just in time to meet you during your departure. I gave you hell for never reading my many letters that I wrote to you during the Glenn Campbell Happy Hour Show. I must have been about 7 years, but waiting patiently each week for you to read my letter, which included a marriage proposal… YOUR LOSS!! Thank you for agreeing to take a few minutes to talk to us and take a picture with me. Your music is one of the many backdrops of my life.

    The best concert I have ever seen, and a great privelige to see a living legend perform his last concert in Scotland.

    I am so sad that I missed Glen’s last Irish tour – unfortunately we just could’nt get to Dublin tonight, been a fan since i was about 6 because his albums were included in the very few vinyl records we had at home, my dad was a big fan and he passed away in September (he suffered from Alzheimers also), nothing moves me more like Glen, he transports me to such a happy place! thank you Glen for your lovely gift to us all :) Sheila

    Went to see Glen Campbell last night in Birmingham with my whole family – it was fantastic! We were all so moved by the show and have been singing ghost on the canvas all day. My son who is ten wrote about it in school. My six year old daughter’s first gig – and what a great one to start. I grew up on this music and feel so privileged that I saw this last tour with my own kids! Glen is an icon and an inspiration – his family too. THANK YOU!

      Totally agree with you. Took my 8 & 10 year old as I wanted them to see the legend that is Glen Campbell. What a show and so emotional too. I hope in years to come they will educate their children this way.

    I have so many wonderful memories of watching you and listening to your music while growing up. You were a tremendous inspiration for me playing the guitar and singing. In 2000, for my 40th birthday, my wife got some tickets to see you at the Birchmere Theatre in Virginia. It was a marvelous show! I want to wish you Godspeed on your farewell tour and tell you that I have said prayers that God will strengthen and preserve you. I am going to try to see you on this final tour, but if not just know that I wil be listening to your music always. It always brings me such joy and good memories. One of my favorite productions is the PBS special you did in 2001 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Boy, that was an awesome show! I picked that up on DVD about 2-3 years ago. When you talk about your faith I can hear genuine words from a genuine man. I wish you and your family well in the months and years ahead. God bless you my friend!

    I started listening to your music in the 60′s and 70′s as a kid. It sounds just as good as today as it did back then.     My Dad WAS a lineman for the county and he played that 8 – track tape until it wore out. My brother, sisters and I rolled all over the back of our station wagon singing along to Wichita lineman. So when we had the opportunity to take him to see You perform at Renfro Valley (KY) last night, those wonderful memories of my childhood came flooding back and I delighted in watching my father sing along as you played. Thank you Glen for years of share your God-given talent with us. I look forward to following your children’s musical careers-they take after you.

We loved his family; it was so refreshing to see them helping him celebrate his life now instead of tucking him away somewhere…alzheimer’s was evident until he made a strum on his guitar…then you would never know he had a problem…We loved our evening….it was worth the 4 hour drive! Hope he has many more happy years with his family!!

You have so much God given talent with which you have blessed us for so many years; a signature voice, a signature smile, a signature style, and an amazing ability to play the guitar. Follow the doctor’s orders, and pray to the Great Physician. We never know when He will reveal a cure. Keep singing as long as He is willing. By the way, Mr. Campbell, you are not a rhinestone; that is made by man. You are a diamond; one of God’s creations. At least that is how I see it. Thank you for all the wonderful music you gave us.     That you are making this tour is great; it shows courage and determination to not give up, as does your signature smile. I just wish you had scheduled a performance in Texas, like in Dallas; I would love to see your show. Keep smiling that smile and singing those songs.

    When I was 8 years old i remember getting the Rhinestone Cowboy record and playing it on our families record player over and over it must have drove my parents crazy. From hearing that record over and over my older brother learned Rhinestone cowboy on the guitar and played it at his talent contest in school. I remember him singing “like a Rhinestone Cowboy a “C” “G”. My prayers go out for you Mr Campbell and your family and I wish you the best!!! Cant wait to see your show in Phoenix!!!

    Glen, how about playing in Albuquerque on your farewell tour? It is, after all, where you got your start in music all those years ago playing in your uncle’s band.     as a little boy i always liked Glen Camp his song Wichita line men is my favorite and I play it over and over again because that song brings good memories when i was a kid I am now 49 years old now and that songs still sounds very good to me> Thank you Mr. Campbell for all of the music you gave to the world and i remember your show that used to come here in Philadelphia on Sundays nights and i believe your show came on CBS around 9.00pm.
